QuickCheck: Does Malaysia export more microchips than the US?

WHILE the United States is considered one of the most technologically advanced nations on the planet, Malaysia actually surpassed it in exporting integrated circuits, better known as microchips, in 2021.

Is this true?

Verdict:

TRUE

Not only did Malaysia export more microchips than the US, our country was the sixth largest producer of chips in the world in 2021.

With US$59.6bil worth of chips exported compared to the US' US$52.8bil, Malaysia produces some 5.7% of the world's supply of integrated circuits.

Not only that, but microchips makes up almost 20% of Malaysia's total exports, making it the country's largest export, followed by petroleum and petroleum gas (5.07%); and while Malaysia supplies a quarter of the world's palm oil and is the second largest producer of it in the world, it only makes up 3.97% of its exports.
