QuickCheck: Will road users be limited to RFID payments to pay tolls in 2022?

All payment lanes at toll highways nationwide will soon be RFID only.

Is this true?

Verdict:

FALSE

With Chinese New Year happening next week, many road users who will be joining the "balik kampung" exodus will be happy to know that the Touch 'n Go card and Smart Tag lanes would be maintained for the immediate future.

However, Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, said that the Touch 'n Go card and Smart Tag lane would be phased out by 2025 but this date was dependent on when RFID penetration reached a satisfactory rate and when highway concessionaires were ready to link up with additional online payment providers.

Fadillah did however add that once implemented, the public would be able to pay highway tolls using any digital payment provider, not just Touch 'n Go.

Road users would be able to use any digital mode of payment – whether you want to use Touch ‘n Go eWallet, debit or credit card, or Visa or Mastercard or any kind of (electronic) payment system, as long as there was a link available on the (particular) highway they were using.
