Japanese scienties are inviting the public to name an asteroid that may contain the secret of life.

PETALING JAYA: An asteroid will not hit Earth on Feb 1, says the National Space Agency (Angkasa).

"We would like to stress that this is fake news," it said.

Angkasa said it had received many queries and reactions on news reports that an asteroid was going to hit Earth on that date.

The agency said that an asteroid that was named 2002NT7 had been discovered by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) in 2002.

Nasa had made calculations that based on astronomy theories, there was a less than one percent chance that there would be a collision.

"However, based on further monitoring and calculations, the odds that the asteroid would hit earth is very small and almost impossible.

"The public does not have to feel worried about this. We also urge people not to be influenced by viral news and be more careful when sharing information," it said in a statement on Thursday.
