China's listed firms donate over 5bil yuan for epidemic control

BEIJING: China's listed firms have donated money and goods totaling over 5 billion yuan (US$716mil) to support the fight against theCovid-19 (coronavirus) outbreak, a senior official with the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) said Saturday.

Securities companies, futures companies, public fund companies and private equity firms have donated money and goods totalling 900 million yuan, Yan Qingmin, vice chairman of the CSRC, said at a press conference.

The death toll from the Covid-19 epedemic jumped past 1,500 on Saturday (Feb 15) but new infections fell following a mid-week surge, announced by the Chinese Government.

More than 66,000 people have now been infected in China from a virus that emerged in central Hubei province in December before spreading across the country a month later and causing global panic.

Some 1,700 medical workers have been infected, with six dying from the COVID-19 illness, officials said, underscoring the country's struggle to contain the deepening health crisis.
