TAIPEI: President Chen Shui-bian narrowly won re-election yesterday, a day after being shot in an assassination attempt, but a referendum he had championed on beefing up defences against China failed because not enough voters took part.
His opponent, Lien Chan, asked for the election results to be nullified, suggesting the attempt on Chen's life on Friday gained him crucial sympathy votes and saying there were more than 330,000 invalid ballots - 10 times Chen's margin of victory.
