EXCAVATIONS in Singapore over 20 years have lent weight to the theory that a thriving overseas Chinese settlement existed here about 500 years before Stamford Raffles arrived.
The outpost, in what was then Temasek, was probably an informal settlement, as the Chinese were not allowed to live outside their country for any great length of time.
