Fire safety checks clear 28 poll centres

MELAKA: A total of 28 nomination and official vote-tallying centres have been inspected for safety compliance ahead of the 16th Melaka election.

State Fire and Rescue Department director Mohd Zaidi Ma’at said the checks were carried out at the request of the Election Commission (EC) to ensure fire safety facilities are functioning properly.

“The inspections cover fire safety systems and emergency exits to ensure that safety at nomination and polling centres is given due attention.

“So far, all centres checked have met fire safety requirements, and we are prepared to respond to any emergencies throughout the election process,” he told Bernama after the state department’s monthly assembly at its headquarters in Bukit Katil here yesterday.

Mohd Zaidi said the department had earlier conducted joint simulation exercises in Masjid Tanah with the police and the EC to prepare for possible incidents, including riots, fires and other emergencies.

“The exercises aim to ensure that the agencies involved are prepared to coordinate their response in the event of an incident requiring assistance from the department,” he said.

Mohd Zaidi added that all fire stations in Melaka had been placed on standby to respond to potential emergencies, including fires and floods, throughout the polls.

Today is the nomination day for the Melaka election, which is set on Nov 14.
