Fruit seller killed, another injured as logging trailer crashes near Sandakan

SANDAKAN: A 50-year-old fruit seller was killed and a passenger seriously injured after a logging trailer crashed into a roadside stall and a 10-tonne cargo lorry along Jalan Labuk, near Ulu Dusun, on Wednesday morning (Oct 14).

The deceased was identified by the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department as Ernawati Lajaruddin.

She was rushed to the Ulu Dusun Health Clinic following the accident but succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment.

“The cause of the accident is still under investigation, and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” said Sandakan OCPD Asst Comm George Abd Rakman.

The Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 8.24am and deployed seven firefighters from the Sandakan station, who arrived at the scene at 9.03am.

Rescuers found that the logging truck had ploughed into the roadside stall and the cargo lorry. A 31-year-old passenger in the cargo lorry, Rosimah Nari, was trapped inside with severe injuries.

Firefighters extricated her and administered first aid before transferring her to Beluran Hospital.

The cargo lorry driver, Norman Tajudin, 30, and a three-year-old girl travelling with him escaped unhurt. The driver of the logging trailer was also uninjured.

Firefighters cleared logs scattered across the road to restore traffic flow, successfully concluding the rescue operation at 9.34am.
