"Japanese authorities informed the department that two men and three women were arrested at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo on Oct 10 after customs officers found 5kg of cocaine concealed in the insoles of shoes worn by the suspects," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Oct 14).

"Travel records show that six Malaysians departed from KLIA Terminal 2 for Haneda Airport on Oct 9 for a holiday.

"Five of them were arrested the following day, while the sixth individual was not detained and has returned to Malaysia."

Comm Hussein said all six were aged between 19 and 26.

"Five of them are from Sarawak, and none of them have criminal records.

"Japanese authorities are trying to identify the source of the drugs, the individuals involved and the international network behind the case," he added.

He advised travellers to be cautious of holiday offers, particularly if they are asked to carry bags or belongings for others.

He reminded them not to accept or transport items without knowing the contents to avoid being exploited as drug mules.

Any drug-related information can be channelled to the NCID hotline at 012-208 7222.
