MELAKA: A 26-year-old man was jailed for four months after pleading guilty to striking a pregnant woman in the abdomen with a wooden broom handle, leaving her bruised.
Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani sentenced Mohamad Ermy Ezwan Mohd Razak at the Magistrate’s Court in Ayer Keroh here on Thursday (Oct 8), ordering the jail term to run from the date of his arrest.
The accused admitted to voluntarily causing hurt to the 36-year-old woman using a broom handle at a house in Kampung Batu Berendam, Melaka Tengah, at about 7.45pm on Oct 5.
He was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years, a fine, whipping, or any two of these punishments.
According to the facts of the case, the victim discovered that the house she rented to her employee in Kampung Batu Berendam here had been flooded after a tap was left running.
She also found that she could not switch on the electricity.
She contacted the employee who arrived with the accused.
The accused had lunged at the victim and struck her in the abdomen with a wooden broom handle.
When her husband tried to intervene, the accused continued struggling and struck his hand.
The accused then attempted to flee but was restrained by the victim’s brother.
