Immigration nabs 177 undocumented migrants in raids on two Gelang Patah factories

GELANG PATAH: A total of 177 undocumented immigrant workers were detained in an operation at two factories near here on Monday (Oct 5), starting at 5pm.

Johor Immigration director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the operation involved the Immigration Department and Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS)

He said the premises inspected in the joint-operation were an electrical and electronics factory, and a metal engineering plant near here.

“The two factories were raided based on information and intelligence gathering, also complaints from the public on illegal foreign workers being hired by the companies," Mohd Rusdi said in a statement.

He said some of the workers were attempting to escape during inspection but were apprehended.

Mohd Rusdi said those detained were 34 Myanmar men, 24 Bangladeshi males, four men from India, 106 Myanmar women, and nine Nepalese females aged between 19 and 38 years old.

He said they have committed offences under the Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963, Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155).

“The illegal foreigners are now being placed at the Pekan Nanas Immigration Depot in Pontian to assist with investigation and further action," said Mohd Rusdi.
