F1 driver Bottas opts to cycle 350km through Malaysia to get to Singapore Grand Prix

KUALA LUMPUR: Formula 1 driver Valtteri Bottas is currently cycling over 350km through Malaysia to Singapore for the next grand prix.

While other drivers travelled via private jet, the Finnish driver who currently drives for the Cadillac Formula 1 team started his journey after Sunday's Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang Circuit and has made his way through rural roads, cutting through plantations and dirt tracks.

His cross-country ride kicked off just hours after he spun out on Lap 7 of Sunday's (Oct 4) chaotic race at the Sepang International Circuit.

The 37-year-old veteran racer and avid cyclist shared snippets of his ride through various hidden roads and paths, saying he was riding to Singapore on his new bicycle.

"On the gravel roads less travelled and maybe a bit longer," he said in a post on his social media page earlier on Tuesday (Oct 6).

Bottas then shared videos of himself riding during the day and night with only a torch on his helmet for light.

He has been travelling on roads and through hidden passages, an oil palm estate and through Melaka.

He then shared an update on his second day cycling through Malaysia, posting that he had covered 161.9km in five hours and 46 minutes.

He earlier shared that he covered 56.6km in two hours and eight minutes on day one of his journey.

Netizens have also shared videos of Bottas crossing roads and cycling next to their cars.

It is believed Bottas will take three days to reach Singapore, making it in time for media commitments on Thursday.

The 10-time race winner spun into the gravel on the damp track after gambling on slick tyres on Sunday, which also triggered the race's first safety car.

Bottas, who is always seen cycling to and from circuits around the world, has taken part in numerous cycling races over the years with his Australian partner Tiffany Cromwell, a professional road and gravel cyclist.

Bottas recently earned a spot at the Gravel World Championships after finishing fifth in his age group at an off-road qualifying event in the Czech Republic during Formula 1's summer hiatus.

He will miss the Gravel World Championships as it takes place this weekend, clashing with the Singapore Grand Prix.
