PETALING JAYA: Former Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung has applied to join Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama).
Bersama co-leader Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli said Lee sent his application to join the party on Monday (Oct 5).
"The application will be processed in accordance with membership procedures.
"His participation will strengthen the party leadership as the party continues to grow," he said in a statement today.
Lee announced his decision to resign as the Petaling Jaya MP last Friday (Oct 2) after having his PKR membership suspended for three years on Sept 30.
The suspension was due to growing unhappiness among grassroots members following Lee's involvement in Bersama's events.
Rafizi also said that Lee would shoulder the responsibility of leading the upcoming Melaka state election campaign this time, with a focus on building the campaign machinery in Chinese-majority areas.
"Alongside myself, Nik Nazmi and Wong Chen, Lee will serve as one of the leaders guiding the party during the interim period leading up to the election of new leadership, which is expected to take place next year.
"We welcome his participation in building a new platform for future generations," he added.
Rafizi said Lee holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree in Electronic Engineering (Computer) from Multimedia University, as well as a Master of Science degree in Transportation and Logistics from Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST).
"Lee also possesses experience in the corporate and consulting sectors, including with companies based in the United States and Hong Kong.
"Between 2008 and 2011, he served as a senior research officer, a role that included conducting research for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in his capacity as Opposition Leader, while managing research work for 30 PKR MPs," he said.
Lee was elected the Petaling Jaya MP in the 15th General Election and was also a former Semambu state assemblyman in Pahang for two terms.
In PKR, he was the former secretary-general and national communications director.
