PETALING JAYA: PAS has left it to Barisan Nasional to decide if there should be an electoral pact between the coalition and the party in the Melaka election, says Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang (pic).
However, PAS remains firm in rejecting cooperation with Pakatan Harapan, said the party president.
Addressing hesitation among state Barisan leaders regarding an electoral pact, he said the choice rests entirely with them.
Abdul Hadi claimed that Barisan grassroots supporters favoured unity efforts with PAS to secure Malay-Muslim governance in Melaka.
“I have found that most Barisan supporters agree with cooperation with PAS. If Barisan wants to seek cooperation, we agree. Everything can be discussed,” he told reporters when met at Masjid Rusila in Kuala Terengganu.
The Melaka legislative assembly was dissolved on Sept 23 to pave the way for the 16th state election.
On possible collaboration with Pakatan, Abdul Hadi said: “What is important is that Melaka must be led by Malay Muslims. We reject Pakatan Harapan.”
He said PAS remains open to political pacts that ensure Malay-Muslim leadership for the state, adding that party machinery and central leadership were actively negotiating seat allocation based on consensus.
On seat distribution, he expressed confidence that negotiations with allies would proceed smoothly without major clashes, although the final seat number remains unconfirmed.
Addressing uncertainty surrounding the Perikatan Nasional symbol, Abdul Hadi affirmed that PAS is prepared to field candidates under its own “moon” logo.
The logo issue follows the Registrar of Societies’ decision on Sept 24 to suspend Perikatan activities over constitutional compliance issues.
