Lee hints at defending PJ in next GE

PETALING JAYA: Lee Chean Chung (pic), who quit as Petaling Jaya MP, has hinted that he will remain in the constituency for the next general election.

“I want to stay in PJ,” he said at a press conference to announce his resignation.

Lee won the Petaling Jaya seat in the 15th General Election in 2022.

Aside from announcing his resignation as lawmaker, Lee is also planning to quit as PKR member and will be submitting his letter on Monday.

Lee said his decision followed a formal suspension notice, which he received from PKR on Sept 30.

“As such, I have decided to resign.”

Asked whether this meant he would join Bersama, Lee said: “I have already made my decision. But I am sure all of you probably have a good idea of where I am going to go.”

Lee is the latest PKR member to quit the party, following the footsteps of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Wong Chen.

He cited several issues he had championed, including the Urban Renewal Act and the monopoly in Malaysia’s foreign worker management system as well as the Sales and Service Tax, as possible reasons for his suspension.

“The situation has become more serious because I can no longer debate or express my views within the party,” he claimed.

Lee also claimed access to the RM3mil allocation for his constituency had been blocked, with the allocation given to party representatives instead.

Lee said he met Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul on Thursday to inform him of the matter.

“I met the Speaker and had already handed over my resignation letter.

“We met so that I could also hand over my duties as a gesture of respect for the institution,” he said.
