PETALING JAYA: Private hospitals play a vital role in meeting the needs of healthcare in Selangor, which has become more complex and demanding given the growing population and ageing community in the state, says Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Selangor Mentri Besar said the role played by the private sector would help strengthen healthcare capacity and serve the needs of the population, especially those seeking specialised treatment for non-communicable diseases.

He said this during the official launch of the Sunway Medical Centre Damansara (SMCD) here yesterday, which was also attended by Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah.

“SMCD’s location and connectivity through major road networks would also allow patients to access specialist services closer to where they live and work,” Amirudin said in his speech.

“Strong partnerships between governments, private healthcare providers, educational institutions and industries are essential if we are to build a healthcare ecosystem that is resilient, innovative and sustainable.”

Amirudin also welcomed SMCD’s planned future expansion, noting that having multiple specialist services within one institution was increasingly important.

He added that private healthcare institutions like SMCD complemented the national healthcare system by increasing capacity, nurturing healthcare talent, driving medical innovation and contributing to Malaysia’s growing reputation as a regional healthcare destination.

Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long said SMCD had steadily expanded its services since opening, supported by advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies.

These include an AI-supported 3 Tesla MRI, dual-source CT, robotic-assisted knee replacement and O-arm navigation, with further expansion planned to support more complex treatments.

Lau said the next phase would include expanding Levels 11 and 12, with Level 11 targeted to begin operations in the first quarter of 2028.

“Once both levels are completed, SMCD’s total capacity is expected to reach 375 beds,” he said in his speech at the same event.

He said over 1.6ha of land beside the SMCD had also been earmarked for potential future expansion, including a dedicated cancer and nuclear medicine centre and Sunway Sanctuary, a senior and assisted-living facility.

Lau added that the proposed cancer centre would include modern capabilities such as a cyclotron, PET-CT scan, linear accelerator and CT simulator, as well as a potential proton beam therapy centre.

“If commissioned, the centre would be the first of its kind in Malaysia.

“Our hope is that this hospital will become part of the heart and soul of Damansara and the surrounding communities, one that understands their needs and is there for people through every stage of life,” he added.

Located in Kota Damansara, the more than 370-bed hospital has served communities across the Klang Valley since it first began operations in December 2024, under the Sunway Healthcare Group.

This includes providing a broad range of speciality care such as orthopaedics and spine care, cardiology, neurosciences, digestive health, ENT, oncology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and women’s and children’s health.

Other services like maternity and paediatric care, chemotherapy, haemodialysis, rehabilitation and diagnostic services are also available at the hospital.

The hospital has, among others, 60 specialist consultation suites, eight operating theatres, a 24-hour Accident and Emergency department, intensive and high-dependency care facilities and a cath lab.
