Penang drug busts yields RM4.4mil in seizures

GEORGE TOWN: Four people, including a foreign woman, were detained in three drug operations within a week, with drugs worth RM4.4mil seized.

The first case involved a 47-year-old Malaysian man who was seen carrying a package to a vehicle parked at a premises near Jalan Masjid Negeri at about 3.30pm on Sept 21.

An interrogation led to the seizure of 8.83kg of heroin and 5.35kg of crystal methamphetamine worth an estimated RM443,518 at the premises used to store drugs and drug-processing equipment.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng said the man had been remanded for 14 days until Monday to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act.

In the second case, a man and his foreign female partner were arrested in Sungai Nibong at about 8.50pm on Sept 22 for alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

“Two raids conducted around Jalan Tun Dr Awang and Sungai Nibong Kecil resulted in the seizure of 3.26kg of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) powder and five litres of liquid MDMA valued at RM2.2mil,” he said.

The couple had been remanded for 14 days until Tuesday under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act, he said.

In the third case, a 45-year-old man was detained near Jalan Seladang, Bukit Mertajam, at about 11.30pm on Sept 27.

Police seized 11.8kg of MDMA powder, 182 ecstasy and Erimin 5 pills, and 70g of ketamine, with a total estimated value of RM1.8mil.

The suspect had been remanded for seven days until tomorrow under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act.

Comm Lim said investigations showed all four suspects had been active in drug trafficking in Penang since July.

Police also seized six vehicles worth RM58,000 under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act.
