Farmer killed in unprovoked jumbo attack

A FARMER in Tamil Nadu, India, was killed in an unprovoked attack by an elephant, leading to much anxiety among fellow villagers, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Identified only as Muniappa, the 59-year-old man from the Onnepuram tribal village in the Melagiri hills of Krishnagiri town, was out tending to his cattle at a forest area with other farmers at the time.

An adult elephant which suddenly came charging out of the forest chased and attacked the unlucky farmer, killing him on the spot.

The area was too remote to rush him to any hospital.

Other farmers reported the attack to forestry officials and the police.

The death of the father of two has left a pall over the village. Now, the other farmers are in fear.

Tamil Nadu state has recorded 522 deaths from elephant encounters between 2015 and July 2025, according to statistics from forestry officials.
