KUALA LUMPUR: SpaceX has donated 50 Starlink kits to Malaysia to strengthen the country’s disaster preparedness, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister said the contribution was made during a courtesy visit by a SpaceX delegation at the Perdana Putra Building in Putrajaya on Wednesday (Sept 30), where discussions focused on strengthening cooperation through Starlink, the satellite Internet service operated by the US aerospace company.
He said the collaboration would focus on expanding Internet access, particularly for people living in rural and remote areas.
“I appreciate Starlink’s role in supporting the Government’s efforts to expand coverage and improve the quality of Internet access through the National Digital Network (JENDELA), including in rural areas of Sabah and Sarawak as well as Orang Asli settlements in the peninsula,” he said in a social media post.
Anwar said he also welcomed the operation of Starlink’s Point of Presence (PoP) infrastructure in Cyberjaya, which would help facilitate local data traffic and improve service quality for users.
He said the Government remained committed to ensuring that technological advances translated into tangible benefits for the people, while cybersecurity, data protection and safe Internet use continued to be prioritised alongside the expansion of connectivity.
“Technological advancement must bring tangible benefits to the people.
“Alongside the expansion of Internet coverage, cybersecurity, data protection and safe Internet usage must continue to be given priority,” he said.
Anwar said the Government wanted rural communities to have access to quality and secure Internet services so that they would not be left behind in the country’s development.
“We want to ensure that communities in rural areas also enjoy quality and safe Internet access so that they are not left behind in the country’s progress,” he said.
Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil was also present during the meeting.
