GEORGE TOWN: Nine people, including four foreigners, have been issued notices for minor littering offences since the Penang Island City Council’s (MBPP) community service order took effect on July 1.
One of them, a 50-year-old local man, was sentenced to eight hours of community service and fined RM500.
MBPP mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said the man had completed two hours of community service, with six hours remaining.
The other eight cases were still pending trial, he said, adding that further details would be disclosed once the court decisions were delivered.
“We have issued nine notices for minor littering offences and referred the cases to court, securing one conviction so far,” he said after a council meeting at City Hall in Jalan Padang Kota Lama yesterday.
Rajendran also urged the media not to publicise or film the community service sessions, ensuring offenders are protected from public embarrassment.
He stressed that the focus must remain on rehabilitation, adding that safeguarding offender privacy allows individuals to complete their service without unnecessary scrutiny.
Under rules effective July 1, offenders convicted of minor littering face up to 12 hours of community service within six months, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
