KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police are closely monitoring public reactions surrounding a series of concerts by American gospel singer Israel Houghton, scheduled to take place at several venues across the city from October 22 to 25.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun stated that authorities have received two police reports following online promotions for the event.
The concerns raised by members of the public center on sensitivities regarding the artist’s name and allegations concerning his stance on Israel.
Speaking at a press conference at the State Police Headquarters in Kepayan on Monday (Sept 28), Jauteh noted that despite the concerts being widely advertised with specific dates, venues, and ticket prices, the organizers have yet to submit a formal application to the state government.
"This has created confusion because the concert has been publicly promoted, yet no formal application has been submitted to the state government, nor has the police been asked to provide its views," Jauteh said, confirming that the state administration has received no official paperwork.
Police are continuing to monitor developments, record statements from relevant parties, and assess public sentiment. Jauteh urged all organizers and stakeholders to take prevailing public sensitivities seriously.
While the final authority on approval rests with the state government, Jauteh indicated that if formal advice is requested, law enforcement would likely recommend postponing the event under current conditions.
"Our priority is to ensure that issues involving public sensitivities do not affect public order," Jauteh said. "We will do our best to ensure that any issue that could potentially disrupt public harmony is addressed with appropriate action."
Israel Houghton is a Grammy Award-winning American gospel singer, songwriter, and worship leader who fronts the Christian music group Israel & New Breed. The Sabah dates are understood to be part of an ongoing international tour.
