KOTA KINABALU: The injured elephant calf, seen limping in pain at a forest reserve in interior Telupid, was captured and given medication for its severely injured foot on Thursday (Sept 24) morning.
Sabah Wildlife Department director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar said the female calf was captured at around 7.30am.
“Veterinarians and rangers removed the rope which had eaten into the flesh and caused injury, before treating the wound,” he said when contacted.
He said the calf was left to wander back with its herd, but ground staff will still be in the area to monitor its condition for a few days.
Soffian said the 200kg calf was about a year and a half in age.
On Wednesday, the non-governmental organisation Community Elephant Ranger Team Telupid had posted a video of the injured calf on its social media page, raising concern over the elephant’s injury.
