KOTA KINABALU: A tourist from China has drowned while snorkelling in waters off Pulau Mengalum here.
Kota Kinabalu City police chief Asst Comm Shahrudin Mat Husain said the female victim, in her 30s, drowned while snorkelling in waters about 1.5m deep.
"The victim had been snorkelling for about 15 minutes when a boat crew member monitoring the tourists noticed she was unconscious," he said on Wednesday (Sept 23).
He said medical personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) but she did not respond. The victim was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.
Police received a report on the incident at about 1.30pm.
The victim is believed to be part of a group of 17 tourists.
ACP Shahrudin said a police forensic team examined the scene and found no elements of foul play. The case has been classified as sudden death.
