PETALING JAYA: The Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM) has extended a sincere invitation to Sepang Umno division chief Datuk Noorazli Said to a dialogue, after the latter apologised for his statements about Christianity and the Bible.
The CCM said they hope the meeting would be a reconciliatory one that will produce a fruitful conversation to exchange views on how interfaith relationships can be collectively strengtened in the country.
"This invitation is also extended to any elected representatives, community leaders and faith leaders who believe that peace, mutual respect, and reconciliation are crucial building blocks of a progressive and prosperous Malaysia," the group said in a statement.
This invitation comes following a speech made by Noorazli at the recent Umno general assembly, where he made a joke about priests.
His speech has been widely condemned since, including by Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh and Sabah Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Arthur Kurup, both of whom said the Sepang Umno division chief should issue an apology over his remarks.
Noorazli later issued a statement expressing his apologies.
The CCM said the widespread pushback is entirely justified as Noorazli's comments have absolutely no place in the country's multi-religious and multi-racial society.
While they denounced the use of the Bible in any derogatory manner, the council said this episode serves as a timely reminder that every citizen bears a responsibility to safeguard not only the country's sovereignty, but also the harmony and good relations among the diverse ethnic and religious communities.
They also welcomed Noorazli's subsequent apology, saying that they believe that being willing to apologise and to forgive are vital steps towards true reconciliation.
"We further believe genuine reconciliation can only be achieved when parties are willing to come together, sit at the same table and offer grace to one another."
