PENGERANG: Efforts to contain peat soil fires at the Bukit Pelali Chinese cemetery and the Sebana-Punggai bypass road are ongoing.
Sebana Cove Fire and Rescue station chief Umar Hafiz Roslee Amir said about 17ha of the areas were razed by fire which started at 5.08pm on Sunday.
“As of now, we managed to put off the fire covering 6.8ha, or 40% of the area,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Umar Hafiz said strong winds, spot fires and forest terrain made firefighting difficult.
He said the areas engulfed in fire were divided into two sectors – Sector A (13ha) and Sector B (4ha) for the firefighting efforts.
“We are using a direct attack method with a 500ft water hose, one dividing breech, three jet pumps, a portable water pump and open water for Sector A,’’ he said.
Umar Hafiz said for Sector B, a long water hose, two jet pumps, a portable water pump and water from Ranhill SAJ were being used.
He added the team faced difficulties due to operational equipment breakdown with a portable pump leaking at the throttle body and a faulty coil plug.
