KOTA KINABALU: The haze situation in Sabah continues worsen with four areas on the west coast, in the interior and Tawau recording unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings of over 150 to 170.
Despite strong winds and rains late Monday (Aug 31), API readings from two stations here hit 174 and remained at unhealthy levels of above 160.
Kimanis station in the south-western Beaufort and Papar districts recorded an API of 162, while interior Keningau reached 159, and Tawau on the east coast, 144.
The Federal Territory of Labuan also recorded an unhealthy API reading of 164.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said on Tuesday (Sept 1) that measures would be implemented in areas where API readings cross into very unhealthy levels of 200 and above.
He urged people in affected areas to take health precautions in view of unhealthy air caused by transboundary fires, especially in Sabah’s neighbouring Kalimantan.
He added that the government was concerned about the haze situation and its impact on the people's health and wellbeing.

"We are monitoring developments and will continue to work with the authorities and relevant agencies to ensure appropriate measures are taken based on the latest situation.
"At the same time, I urge the people to remain cautious and take preventive steps to protect their health and their families.
"Special attention should be given to children, the elderly, and those vulnerable to air pollution," he added.
He also advised the public to follow updates and guidance from the authorities through official channels and adjust their daily activities according to current conditions.
API readings in Sabah began to rise on Saturday (Aug 29), while neighbouring Sarawak has battled the problem for weeks.
