GEORGE TOWN: For some blood donors in Penang, celebrating Malaysia’s 69th National Day comes with a medal – one that can only be earned after rolling up their sleeves 69 times.
The Penang Health Department is presenting a specially designed commemorative medal and certificate to donors who have made 69 blood donations, marking the nation’s 69th year of Inde-pendence.
The colourful, two-sided medal carries a distinctly Penang identity, featuring Komtar, the Penang flag and bunga raya alongside the Jalur Gemilang.
A large drop of blood bearing the words “69 Tahun Kemerdekaan Malaysia” takes centre stage, while a banner below reads “Derma Darah, Jiwa Merdeka” (Donate Blood, Spirit of Independence).
The obverse features Malay-sians dressed in the traditional attire of six ethnic groups holding hands, accompanied by a message of appreciation to blood donors.
Penang Hospital’s blood bank said the special medal was intended to recognise the commitment and service of long-time donors.
“Sixty-nine times is not merely a number. It represents 69 occasions when you chose to save lives,” it said in a statement.
To qualify, donors must have made 69 blood donations, with at least one made at a Health Ministry hospital blood bank in Penang.
They must also be Penang residents and bring their blood donation books as proof of their donation records to receive the medal and certificate.
