KUCHING: Sarawak's electricity supply remains reliable and sufficient despite the prolonged dry weather, says Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB), supported by measures to manage conditions at its hydroelectric power plants (HEPs).
Reduced rainfall in catchment areas since April has resulted in lower inflows into the Bakun, Murum and Batang Ai HEP reservoirs, SEB noted in a statement on Friday (Aug 28).
However, it said it is managing the conditions by adjusting the generation mix as needed.
"Hydropower typically accounts for around 65% of electricity supplied to the grid, with thermal generation making up roughly 34% and other sources the remaining 1%.
"During prolonged dry periods, hydropower output may be reduced to conserve reservoir levels, while thermal generation is increased as needed to maintain reliable electricity supply.
"When reservoir conditions improve, the balance can be adjusted accordingly," it added.
The state utility said it was closely monitoring hydrological and reservoir conditions at the three HEPs and working closely with the relevant agencies to coordinate the ongoing response.
It said two cloud-seeding operations were carried out in May and June to encourage rainfall over major dam and water catchment areas, with a third operation scheduled for Sept 3 to 5.
SEB also urged customers to use electricity prudently, particularly in using air-conditioning and other cooling appliances, during the current hot and dry spell.
"Sarawak Energy, together with the state government and relevant agencies, remains committed to maintaining reliable electricity supply for all customers while continuing efforts to conserve reservoir levels during the prolonged dry period," it said.
