Products worth RM304,893 hidden at vehicle workshop
KUALA LANGAT: Police raided a vehicle workshop which was used as a storage facility for contraband cigarettes in Jenjarom.
General Operations Force (GOF) 4th Battalion commanding officer Supt Amanjit Singh said the syndicate rented a workers’ house within the workshop compound at Kampung Sungai Rambai, Jenjarom, for the purpose.
“To avoid detection by the authorities, the syndicate used an external courier company to make the deliveries,” he said.
He said police seized 805 cartons of various cigarette brands worth RM304,893.50, believed to be untaxed, as well as a mobile phone, during the Friday raid.
The raid was conducted under Ops Taring Alpha 1 by the 4th Battalion GOF Intelligence Branch in Semenyih, with assistance from the Kuala Langat district Criminal Investigation Division (CID).
A local man believed to be the workshop caretaker was also arrested.
Supt Amanjit said the cigarettes were believed to have been supplied to retail shops owned by foreign nationals around Jenjarom.
He said the syndicate had been operating for about four months, with the suspect acting as caretaker and arranging deliveries based on orders and buyer details provided by his employer.
“Based on our records, members of the same syndicate were previously arrested by the 4th Battalion GOF in Bukit Raja in March,” he said.
The suspect and seized items were taken to the Kuala Langat district police headquarters for further investigation under the Customs Act 1967.
