Penang Hill funicular service to close from Jan 4-10 for scheduled maintenance

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Hill Funicular Service will temporarily close from Jan 4 to 10, 2027, for its first scheduled maintenance session.

The maintenance will include repairs to the track structure at the Lower Station, as well as the funicular’s air-conditioning system and roof.

During the shutdown, visitors can use the jeep service operated by the Penang Hill Jeep Service Association (012-454 1255), located next to the Penang Botanic Gardens Department office, or take existing hiking trails to the summit.

In a statement, Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) said it also conducts daily, weekly and monthly checks and maintenance of the funicular system, along with routine inspections after operating hours.

It said two major scheduled maintenance sessions are carried out each year under the supervision of engineers from the funicular manufacturer, Garaventa AG of Switzerland, to ensure the system remains in good working condition and complies with stringent safety requirements.

For enquiries, contact PHC at 04-828 8880 or email inquiries@penanghill.gov.my.
