PETALING JAYA: A prison officer has been remanded for six days over allegations that he solicited and accepted about RM3,000 in bribes to smuggle prohibited items into a prison.
The remand order, until Aug 10, was issued by Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani at the Ayer Keroh Magistrate's Court on Wednesday (August 5) following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
According to a source, the suspect, a man in his 20s, was arrested at about 11.50am on Tuesday (August 4) at his home in Sungai Petani, Kedah.
“Initial investigations found that the suspect allegedly committed the offence in March while serving at a prison in Melaka.
“He is believed to have received the alleged bribe through transfers into his e-wallet account,” a source said.
Melaka MACC director Datuk Adi Supian Shafie confirmed the arrest when contacted, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
