PETALING JAYA: The government should intensify enforcement against illegal employment and business activities, unlawful occupation of land and any other activities that undermine the rule of law and create unfair competition for legitimate businesses, says the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF).
Its president Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman said the continued challenges associated with undocumented migrants and unresolved refugee management issues required urgent attention.
“We believe that prolonged uncertainty surrounding refugee and undocumented migrant management has created challenges for employers, enforcement agencies, local communities and public services,” he said in a statement.
“More intense enforcement efforts against illegal employment, illegal business activities, unlawful occupation of land and any other activities that undermine the rule of law should be done by the government,” he added.
Syed Hussain added that employers needed policy certainty, effective enforcement and a clear national framework that protected Malaysia’s economic interests while addressing humanitarian concerns in a practical and sustainable manner.
He said constructive engagement with international bodies, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), should be pursued to develop practical and sustainable solutions that safeguard Malaysia’s national interests while addressing humanitarian considerations.
“Malaysia has always been known as a compassionate and welcoming nation. However, compassion must be accompanied by effective governance, strong enforcement and clear policies,” he said.
“The government should provide greater clarity on the long-term management of refugee populations in the country, including clear pathways, responsibilities and timelines that balance humanitarian obligations with the legitimate concerns of employers, local communities and businesses, especially micro, small and medium enterprises,” he added.
He noted that MEF was ready to work with the authorities, industry stakeholders and international organisations to develop balanced and sustainable solutions that protect employers, support economic growth and uphold the rule of law.
“At the same time, the government should strengthen cooperation with UNHCR to enhance refugee registration, documentation and monitoring processes, to safeguard the interests of both refugees and the host community,” he said.
