SEREMBAN: All successfully elected assemblymen from Barisan Nasional must begin work immediately, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
"All pledges in the manifesto must be implemented. The rakyat's trust in us must be repaid by efficient service," said the Barisan chairman during a press conference at Wisma Umno here on Saturday (Aug 1).
Ahmad Zahid said the understanding between Barisan and Perikatan Nasional will now be translated into the formation of a stable state government based on the people's mandate.
"We recognise that this mandate comes with a great responsibility to form a stable, credible and hardworking state government that will resolve the people's problems and bring greater prosperity to Negri Sembilan," he said, adding there was no place for arrogance or complacency.
"The people's trust must be repaid with hard work, credible governance and better service to all the people of Negri Sembilan," he said.
Ahmad Zahid said Barisan and Perikatan would hold further talks.
"We will hold further discussions between to finalise the formation of the new state government, subject to the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar and the Undang.
"We accept this outcome with humility and a deep sense of responsibility," he said.
Based on unofficial results, Barisan secured 18 seats, while Perikatan secured seven, bringing the total seats to 25.
Earlier, Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said Barisan, alongside its Perikatan Nasional, its ally in the Negri Sembilan polls, were leading with a combined 25 seats based on unofficial results.
"This will allow Barisan and Perikatan to form the state government with a two-thirds majority," he said.
The two-thirds mark for the 36-seat state assembly is 24 seats.
