Premature baby found dumped in bushes in Penampang

KOTA KINABALU: A deceased premature baby was found in some bushes at Kg Goliga Kolopis, Penampang, on Tuesday (July 28) morning.

Penampang OCPD Supt Sammy Newton said a homeowner stumbled upon the body, which had yet to be fully developed, at around 11.52am, and alerted the police.

“Our team of investigators, personnel from the forensics unit as well as canines from the K9 unit were dispatched to the scene to respond,” he said in a statement.

The corpse was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a post-mortem and further investigation, while efforts are being made to trace the individuals responsible for the crime.

The case is being probed under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealment of birth. If convicted, the offender can be jailed up to two years, or fined, or both.

Supt Sammy urged those who have information to assist in investigations to contact investigating officer Insp Mohamad Anis Abdullah at 013-6365734 or give their statement at any nearby police station.

“Do not speculate on this case and spread unverified information anywhere, including on social media, as such actions may disrupt the ongoing probe,” he advised.
