GEORGE TOWN: The Star's Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) programme received a boost from M Summit Group, which contributed RM5,000 to support English learning among students in two Penang schools.
The sponsorship provides complimentary newspaper subscriptions for more than 1,000 students at SJK (T) Bayan Lepas and SMK Bayan Lepas over a three-month period from May to July.
M Summit Group founder and chairman Datuk Seri Albert Moh See Eng said education had played an important role in shaping his career and providing opportunities that eventually led him to establish the company.
"Every achievement begins with learning. The knowledge, discipline and values I gained through education laid the foundation for my journey in building M Summit Group.
"In fact, I started improving my English by reading The Star when I was in Form One and Two," he said.
Moh said access to quality reading materials was important in helping students strengthen their language skills and broaden their perspectives.
"I hope these newspapers will become a valuable resource in English classrooms by encouraging students to read more, improve their vocabulary and develop greater confidence in using the language," he said.
He added that nurturing a reading culture among young people was an investment in the nation's future.
"As a home-grown Penang company, we believe in giving back to the community by supporting initiatives that create meaningful and lasting impact.
"Investing in education is one of the best ways we can contribute to future generations," he said.
The sponsorship is part of M Summit Group's corporate social responsibility efforts to support education and community development.
The Star's NiE programme uses newspapers as a classroom learning tool to help students improve their English while keeping up with current affairs.
Teachers can also incorporate news articles into lessons to encourage discussions, comprehension and critical thinking among students.
