Fahmi: Ensure all images and displays of Jalur Gemilang are accurate
IPOH: The public has been reminded to use artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly when creating images or content featuring the Jalur Gemilang, amid concerns over inaccuracies involving depictions of the national flag.
Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the public should take the time to understand the proper protocol for displaying the Jalur Gemilang while being mindful of errors that AI-generated content could have.
“We encourage everyone to learn the correct way to fly the Jalur Gemilang and to be careful when using AI to generate content so that there are no mistakes or omissions.
“This is very important, particularly when it comes to the national flag’s 14 stripes,” he told a press conference after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2026 celebrations yesterday.
Fahmi said the ministry would also work with the Malaysian Press Institute and the Malaysian Media Council to ensure that any AI-generated representation of the Jalur Gemilang published during National Month is accurate.
Asked whether action would be taken against those who produce inaccurate AI-generated images of the Jalur Gemilang, or fly the flag incorrectly, Fahmi said the government’s initial approach would be to advise those responsible to correct the mistakes.
“If the errors are not rectified, we will then consider the appropriate follow-up action. But we will begin by providing advice,” he said.
He also encouraged Malaysians to fly the Jalur Gemilang at their homes, villages, and government premises from now until Malaysia Day on Sept 16 as part of the Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign.
Besides the campaign, he said the ministry would organise the “Jelajah Jiwa Merdeka” roadshow, with details of its programmes to be made available on the Merdeka 360 website.
Fahmi said he hoped the National Month celebrations in August will not only mark the beginning of the annual observance of National Day but also strengthen patriotism and remind Malaysians of their responsibility to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty, preserve unity, and secure its future.
In his speech earlier, Fahmi said this year’s National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations are themed “Malaysia Madani: Kese-jahteraan Dinikmati” (Prosperity Enjoyed).
This reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring the country’s progress, prosperity, and development are shared fairly, equitably, and inclusively by all Malaysians, he said.
He said this year’s National Month celebrations will be held financially prudently by optimising available resources, while continuing to prioritise patriotism and appreciation for the nation’s independence.
Among the key initiatives is the continuation of the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang programme to instil patriotism and showcase the message of unity and love for the nation, he said.
“The One Home, One Jalur Gemilang initiative will also be intensified to encourage Malay-sians to fly the national flag as a symbol of the country’s sovereignty, unity, and national pride,” Fahmi added.
