Trio claim trial to armed shop robbery in Ipoh


IPOH: Three co-accused have entered a plea of not guilty in a Sessions Court to using a parang to rob a local shop.

The accused, S. Barani Tharan, 33, Yuvaneswara, 30 and M. Suntaresswaran,28, claimed trial after the charge was read to them before Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad on Friday (July 17).

They were jointly charged with committing gang robbery using a parang at the property of an individual, and robbing the victim of RM850 cash, a tablet, a mobile phone and a sling bag.

The offence was allegedly committed at a shop in Jalan Klebang Ria 2, Taman Klebang Ria here at about 5.55am on May 31 this year.

The charge was framed under Section 395 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397 of the Penal Code.

The offence is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 20 years, and shall also be liable to whipping.

Deputy Public Prosecutor M. Raveena prosecuted, while K. Nahtan represented all three accused.

Raveena said although the offence was non-bailable, under the court’s discretion, if bail was to be offered, she suggested RM20,000 for each accused.

She also asked for additional conditions, including requiring the accused to report to a police station once a month and not to disturb the victim and prosecution witnesses.

Nathan said all three of his clients worked as labourers.

“Yuvaneswara is married, while the other two accused have aged parents to look after.

“I am asking the court to set bail at RM4,000 for each accused,” he said.

Judge Ainul Shahrin set bail at RM4,000 with one surety for each accused.

She fixed Aug 18 as the next mention date.
