KULAI:The Communications Ministry is still assessing the level of compliance among licensed social media platforms with two codes introduced under the Online Safety Act 2025, which came into force on June 1, says Teo Nie Ching.
The Deputy Communications Minister said the Risk Mitigation Code (RMC) and the Child Protection Code (CPC), issued by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to strengthen online safety, place responsibilities on licensed social media platform providers to comply with the prescribed online safety requirements.
"Under these codes, the responsibility clearly rests with licensed platform providers. MCMC and these platform providers will hold discussions to assess their level of compliance.
"We are currently in the assessment stage to evaluate their compliance and we hope to see a high level of adherence," she told reporters after attending the 'Kalapadam' Musical Programme by MINNALfm and the Safe Internet Campaign Carnival here on Saturday (July 4).
On the revival of the 'Kalapadam' musical programme, Teo said the initiative aims to provide more performance opportunities for local artistes, particularly those in the Tamil-language entertainment industry, through Radio Televisyen Malaysia.
The programme, which was once popular among the Indian community, was revived following feedback from members of the arts industry who expressed hope that it would continue, she added.
"When I met with Indian artistes' associations and Tamil artistes, they expressed their wish for this programme to return because it provides more opportunities for local performers to showcase their talent," she said.
Teo said three pilot projects would be implemented to gauge public response to the programme, with Kulai selected as the first venue, while two additional locations are currently being identified.
"If we receive an encouraging response, I believe the prospects of expanding the programme to more locations next year will be very promising," she said.
At the same event, Teo said the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) also presented assistance to five Johor-born artistes under the Madani@Finas Artistes Outreach Programme.
She said the programme, which has been implemented since 2023, has benefited 183 recipients, with total assistance amounting to RM144,900. – Bernama
