PETALING JAYA: There is no stopping France’s attacking juggernaut, and Abbas Saad is more than happy to applaud its brilliance.

The former Australian international and Malaysia Cup-winning legend with clubs in Johor and Singapore was full of praise for France’s dazzling attacking display, spearheaded by the mercurial Kylian Mbappe, at the ongoing World Cup.

Abbas was speaking during a recording of The Star Sportcast at Menara Star yesterday, where he shared his thoughts on the tournament so far and on the fortunes of his own national team, the Socceroos.

But France caught his eye the most, with the former midfielder convinced Les Bleus have what it takes to go all the way after falling just short against Argentina in 2022.

“France frightened me. I’ve said it – it’s probably one of the best attacking performances I’ve seen in a long, long time,” said Abbas.

“That front four, you’ve got Ousmane Dembele on one side, Bradley Barcola on the other, (Kylian) Mbappe through the middle, and then, my God, Michael Olise,” he added.

“I knew he was good, but I didn’t think he was that good. He was absolutely unbelievable.”

“But it wasn’t just about individuals. It was the team performance. I thought they were solid at the back, very creative in midfield and, in attack, especially on the counter, the pace and quality they had were frightening.”

France have already booked their place in the round of 16 after a 3-0 victory over Sweden in the round of 32 and will face Paraguay at Philadelphia Stadium tomorrow.

Abbas also spoke fondly about returning to Malaysia.

“It’s been wonderful to come back. I love Malaysia – it’s like my second home away from Australia.

“I’ve been back for about two weeks now and have really enjoyed the corporate events, doing them alongside (former Singaporean footballer) Fandi Ahmad. It’s all about football, something we know very well and love dearly.

“And, of course, it’s been wonderful covering this great World Cup so far.”
