Johor polls: Amanah cedes Puteri Wangsa seat to PKR

JOHOR BARU: After weeks of speculation, Amanah has finally handed over the coveted Puteri Wangsa state seat to PKR for the upcoming Johor state election.

Johor Amanah chief Aminolhuda Hassan said despite Puteri Wangsa being his party’s traditional seat, it was ceded to PKR following several rounds of negotiations.

“The one who made the request was the Prime Minister… It is okay, we step aside and give them the seat. The decision is final.

“PKR are our partners, there is no point holding on (to the seat) if it results in prolonged rows,” he said when contacted on Sunday (June 21).

Aminolhuda added that Amanah prioritises tolerance and harmony among the Pakatan Harapan component parties, hence the decision to step aside.

“What is more important is that we fight and win as a team,” he said.

Speculation about Amanah stepping aside for PKR to contest in Puteri Wangsa has been rife following a state PKR leader’s recent statement that it would be contesting the seat in the July 11 state polls.

On June 17, Johor Amanah vice chief Dr Zuhan Zain reportedly said the party had made early preparations and organised election machinery to reclaim the seat.

The Puteri Wangsa seat was loaned to Muda during the 2022 Johor state election when the fledgling party was part of Pakatan at the time.

In 2022, Muda’s Amira Aisya Abd Aziz won the seat with 22,884 votes, securing a 7,114 majority in a six-cornered fight.
