KUALA LUMPUR: Sungai Besar division Umno chief Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos has paid an outstanding RM66,600 judgment to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok in a defamation case.
In a statement on Saturday (June 20), lawyer Datuk SN Nair, who acts for Kok, confirmed that Jamal, the judgment debtor, had issued a cheque for RM66,600 to Kok, the judgment creditor, at 5pm on Friday (June 19) as settlement of the judgment debt.
"Following receipt of the payment, the public auction scheduled for June 22, 2026, has been put on hold and will not proceed for now, pending clearance of the cheque.
"The judgment debt will be considered fully settled, and the auction proceedings will be withdrawn accordingly, subject to successful clearance of the cheque," he said, noting that all parties involved had expressed their appreciation to those who helped resolve the matter.
Nair, when contacted by Bernama, said the RM66,600 outstanding judgment amount was legal costs in the defamation case.
On June 12, Nair said 14 movable assets seized from Jamal's home were set to be auctioned on June 22 at 10 am after he failed to pay the outstanding judgment debt.
On July 30, 2024, the Federal Court rejected Jamal's bid for leave to appeal the High Court ruling, which ordered him to pay RM300,000 in damages to Kok.
For the record, Jamal has already paid the RM300,000 in damages.
On July 26, 2022, High Court Judge Datuk Mohd Arief Emran Arifin ordered Jamal to pay RM300,000 in damages and RM50,000 in costs to Kok, after ruling in her favour in a suit relating to alleged misuse of Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (Yawas) funds. – Bernama
