Onn Hafiz's remarks on DAP based on political principles, says BN sec-gen

JOHOR BARU: Barisan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir defended caretaker Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi's recent remarks on DAP, saying they were based on political principles and considerations rather than racial sentiments.

He said no party needs to overreact or excessively criticise Onn Hafiz’s position, stressing that the Johor Barisan chairman consistently prioritised the interests of the people and was not a chauvinist or racist for refusing to cooperate with DAP.

"The issue is not about arrogance or a refusal to engage with those holding different political views," he said in a statement on Tuesday (June 9).

"Onn Hafiz has demonstrated throughout his administration that he served all segments of society regardless of race, religion or political inclination.

"His remarks should be viewed within the context of Johor’s political landscape as the state had been governed by Barisan before the formation of the unity government and the stance reflects the mandate and political position championed by Johor Barisan."

Zambry added that Umno and Barisan had often been subjected to criticism, sarcasm and condemnation from political opponents on various platforms, but had not treated such attacks as major issues or responded with excessive counterattacks.

He urged all parties to focus instead on preparations for the upcoming state election, offering the best ideas and solutions for the people while strengthening Johor's economic development.

Zambry said voters would ultimately judge leaders based on their performance, service record and ability to govern, rather than divisive rhetoric that brings no benefit to the rakyat.

On Sunday (June 7), during the launching of Barisan’s election machinery, Onn Hafiz said the coalition will not work with DAP if it is given the mandate to form the state government.

He said the state’s political landscape differs from the situation at the federal level, adding that Barisan had never governed alongside DAP in the state.
