PETALING JAYA: Former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki wants the police to expedite investigations into allegations made against him by businessman Albert Tei.
“I have urged the police to expedite their investigation because the report lodged by Tei against me is entirely false.
“If there is sufficient evidence of wrongdoing on his part, then he should be charged in court, as his actions have tarnished not only my reputation but also the reputation of the MACC,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Azam also confirmed that his statement was recorded at Bukit Aman yesterday morning to assist in the investigation and that he had given his full cooperation to the investigating officers during the session, which lasted two hours.
In a related development, Azam said he would file a lawsuit against Tei and has instructed his lawyers to issue a legal notice as soon as possible following allegations of criminal intimidation linked to him.
Meanwhile, Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk M. Kumar confirmed that police had recorded Azam’s statement under Section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
He said the statement was taken in relation to two investigations, namely the publication of a Bloomberg.com article containing allegedly defamatory statements concerning ownership of shares in Velocity Capital Partner Bhd and allegations of abuse of power and criminal intimidation involving Tei.
“Both investigation papers will be referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers in the near future for further advice and instructions,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He advised the public not to make any speculation that could affect or interfere with the investigation process.
He noted that the police remained committed to ensuring transparency and integrity in investigations and would not hesitate to take action against any individual found to have breached the law.
Police had previously recorded two statements in connection with the case, namely from Tei himself as well as the lawyer who allegedly conveyed the threats to him.
