Woman pleads guilty to causing newborn baby twin’s death

JOHOR BARU: A 22-year-old woman has pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here to causing the death of one of her newborn baby twins last month.

Nuran Batrisya Jamaludin appeared calm and nodded in understanding as the charge was read out before Judge Mohd Zamir Suhaimee on Wednesday (July 3).

According to the charge sheet, she was accused of causing the death of a baby girl with the intention of inflicting bodily injury likely to result in death.

The offence was allegedly committed at the car park area of Blok Rajawali, People’s Housing Projects (PPR) Melana Indah Phase 2 in Taman Sutera Utama here between 11am and 2.30pm on May 20.

She was charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which carries a maximum jail term of 30 years and a fine upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor R. Nevina, who appeared for the prosecution, did not offer bail.

However, the unmarried accused, who was not represented, appealed to the court to grant her bail, saying she had to care for the victim's surviving twin sibling and was unemployed.

Mohd Zamir allowed bail at RM20,000 with two local sureties.

He also imposed additional conditions requiring the accused to surrender her passport to the court, report to the nearest police station once a month and refrain from interfering with prosecution witnesses.

Mohd Zamir fixed July 3 for mention, submission of documents, post-mortem and case facts, as well as sentencing.
