Scammers busted at Labuan hotel

KOTA KINABALU: An online scam syndicate operating out of a hotel has been crippled following the arrest of 57 suspects, mostly Chinese nationals, during a raid in Labuan.

The operation, conducted by the Sabah Commercial Crime Investigation Department, also led to the seizure of equipment allegedly used in the scam activities, valued at about RM131,500.

According to police sources, the 8.40am raid on Monday resulted in the arrest of 48 Chinese nationals, eight Vietnamese and one Malaysian.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 46, were reported to have been operating from the premises since April, targeting victims in South Korea through online scams.

The hotel is believed to have served as both accommodation and an operations centre for the syndicate.

All suspects were brought before the Labuan Magistrate’s Court for a remand order yesterday.
