Woman killed, seven injured as 4WD plunges into ravine in Keningau


KOTA KINABALU: A woman has been killed and seven others injured when the four-wheel drive vehicle they were in plunged into a ravine in Keningau.

In the incident on Tuesday (June 2), the vehicle carrying eight people, including children, went out of control and plunged into a 10m-deep ravine along Jalan Bingkor, Chanang Hill.

The victims managed to crawl out of the overturned vehicle but one remained pinned inside.

The deceased was thrown out of the vehicle due to the impact.

Keningau Fire Station chief Severinus@Mohd Nidzam Sainkui said they received a distress call at 9.54am on Tuesday and arrived at the scene 12km from the station at around 10.05am.

"We had to rescue a woman who was pinned in her seat, while the others had made their way out," he said in a statement.

He said the woman who was thrown out of the vehicle was pronounced dead by Health Ministry personnel.

Severinus said the deceased was handed over to the police for further action while the injured people were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The operation ended at 11.51am after all hazardous elements were removed, he said.
