EC says will discuss dates for 16th Johor state polls after official notification of dissolution

PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has acknowledged the dissolution of the 15th Johor state legislative assembly.

In a statement Monday (June 1), EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the commission took note of the press conference by Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi earlier in the day.

"With this, the EC will announce a date to hold a special meeting to discuss the pertinent dates for the 16th Johor state assembly elections as soon as it receives official notification from the Speaker of the Johor assembly on the date of the dissolution," he said.

Onn Hafiz had announced the dissolution earlier after obtaining the consent of Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim in the morning.

He said the dissolution would allow the people of Johor to elect a new state government and obtain a fresh mandate to continue the state’s development agenda.
