23 charged with joining criminal gang

KUCHING: Twenty-three men have been charged in three Sessions Courts here for alleged involvement in the Geng 24 Hung-Hung organised crime group.

The accused, aged 19 to 44, appeared before judges Musli Abdul Hamid, Iris Awen Jon and Noorhisham Mohd Jaafar yesterday.

They were charged with being members of the gang at an oil palm plantation in Kampung Temaga Cina/Dayak, Sematan, between December 2021 and April 20 this year.

The offence under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code carries a jail term of five to 20 years, upon conviction.

No plea was recorded as the cases are pending transfer to the High Court.

The court fixed June 22 for mention.

The accused were heavily guarded by armed security personnel throughout the court proceedings.

They were arrested during a special operation codenamed Op Pusak Merah from April 19 to 23 and remanded under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act.

The accused are Tay Ee Hung, Haikal Ling Abdullah, Kenny Stevie Liew Boon Soon, Sim Khien Shen, Ho Seng Ching, Sia Ming Hui, Alex Leong Abdullah, Lim Pang Yee, Malcolm Kho Cheok Kwang, Choo Hua Lee, Yeo Lip Hong, Ronald Aloysius Liew Voon Vui, Adrieen Tan Wee Hau, Liew Chu Sian, Voon Sheng Kim, Jacque Tan Hung Kheng, Kelvin Ong Wei Huo, Andrew Chua Siang Yew, Liew San Hung, Harry Bong Heng Yong, Brendanly Hendry, Krister Patrick Tini and Brandon Foo Hsien Loong.

The cases were prosecuted by DPP Shafiq Hasim and Maryam Jamielah Ab Manaff.

Among the counsel representing the various accused were Hani Iriani Bonny, Datuk Shankar Ram, Ralph Lee, Daniel Ling and Patrick Voon.
