Sabah deports 156 Indonesian illegal immigrants in latest exercise

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Immigration Department has sent back 156 Indonesian illegal immigrants during a deportation exercise on Monday (May 11).

According to the department, the deportees aged three to 62, were deported from the Tawau port to Nunukan, Indonesia.

It said this is the fourth deportation this year. The exercise involved 121 men, 24 women, five boys and six girls.

“All of them were escorted by the Indonesian Consulate representatives in Tawau,” the statement read.

As of Tuesday (May 12), 2,662 illegal immigrants have been deported this year. Among those deported, 63% were Filipinos, 31% were Indonesians, 3% were Pakistanis, 2% were Chinese and others at 1%.

The department warns against hiring or harbouring illegal immigrants, or risk facing legal consequences for doing so.
