Umno looks ahead to next generation

KUALA LUMPUR: As Umno celebrates its 80th year, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi struck a forward-looking note, saying the party’s path to reach 100 years of existence depends on how well it understands and empowers its younger generation.

The Umno president said the direction of the party 20 years from now, when it reaches its centenary, would ultimately be shaped by today’s youth.

“We leave it to the young to determine Umno’s future path,” he said in his address at Umno’s 80th anniversary celebration.

Umno was formed on May 11, 1946 at Istana Besar in Johor Baru.

Ahmad Zahid said the passage of time carried with it a shared responsibility across generations.

He said that harmony between generations must be preserved, guided by mutual care and respect.

“My principle is that the old must care for the young, and the young must respect the old. This is not about what is for me or for you,” he said.

Describing Umno as a “home for the nation”, Ahmad Zahid said the party must be strengthened from within, cautioning that its foundations must remain intact.

“Umno is a house that must be fortified, and most importantly, its roof must not leak,” he said.

He added that the party’s struggle should not be confined to electoral victories, but must instead focus on nurturing leaders who contribute meaningfully to religion, nation and country.

Looking ahead to the centenary milestone, Ahmad Zahid shared a series of aspirations for the Malay community, expressing hope for a generation grounded in faith, character and innovation.

“I dream of Malays whose Islamic faith does not fade, who truly understand the pillars of their religion, inseparable from both body and soul.

“I dream of Malay youths with strong identity, who uphold dignity, who embody refined manners and noble character,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid also spoke of a future where Malays would lead in innovation and progress.

“I dream of Malays who become inventors, who create ideas, generate value and drive the advancement of the nation,” he said.

At the cornerstone of this vision, the Umno president said, is unity.

“I dream of Malays who stand united, weaving networks and holding firmly to a shared strength,” he added.

Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Umno remains a crucial party needed by all coalitions to form the Federal Government.

“This proves that in Malaysian politics, Umno remains an essential complement and balance to national stability,” he said.

The Umno deputy president said the party’s role goes beyond being a supporting force, describing it as a catalyst for reforms, economic development and public welfare.
